Patrick Sutton
I am in the second year of my PhD with Prof Megan O'Mara at the Australian Institute of Bionengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) located at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. I have previously completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Sunshine Coast and a Master of Molecular Biology with Prof O'Mara at AIBN focussing on how multidrug resistant E. faecalis adapts its membrane lipid composition and organisation to develop resistance to last line antimicrobial peptides. In the first year of my PhD, I have employed Molecular Dynamics simulations to investigate multidrug resistance mechanisms in antimicrobial resistant bacteria. Specifically, I am focussed on understanding the action mechanism for the quaternary ammonium compound efflux pump A (QacA), which confers resistance in methicillin resistant S. aureus to common disinfectants, such as chlorhexidine.
